Cefuroxime axetil is a 2nd generation cephalosporin similar to penicillins antibiotics, containing a β-lactam ring structure. Cephalosporins acts as a bactericidal antibiotic which binds to penicillin-binding proteins, inhibiting the last step of the bacterial cell wall synthesis. Once the β-lactam ring binds to penicillin-binding proteins, cross-linking between peptidoglycan units is inhibited.

Absorption: After consumption, cefuroxime axetil is converted into active compound cefuroxime by esterases of mucosal cells in the gastrointestinal tract. Cefuroxime is then released for systematic circulation. Absorption of cefuroxime axetil increases by 52% when given with food as compared to fasting patients.
Distribution: After cefuroxime axetil administration, it can be found in tonsil tissue, bronchial tissue, sinus tissue and middle ear effusion.
Elimination: once cefuroxime is produced the body is unable to metabolize the drug which is then eliminated unchanged in the urine.
